Ann-Ellen Akeley has been teaching composition, literature, and Genocide Studies, a senior interdisciplinary course, since arriving at Oakwood in 1985. She holds a BA in religion and an MA in religious education from Scarritt College in Nashville and both an MA and PhD in Russian literature from the University of Michigan. Her interests include choral performance, poetry, writing, and foreign films. She lives in the "Barn" with her dog. |

Peter F. Baily |

Peter F. Baily has been Head of School since July 2000. He is a graduate of Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, and he attended Earlham and Nasson Colleges. He holds a Master's degree in English literature from Bryn Mawr College, and taught Upper School English at The Vershire School in Vermont, University High School in San Francisco, and The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore. Beyond the classroom, he has chaired two English Departments and a school-wide K-12 curriculum committee, and has coached women's crew. Prior to moving to the Hudson Valley, Peter served as Head of Oak Lane Day School and as Interim Head at the Quaker School at Horsham, both in suburban Philadelphia. He is a member of Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting, and he currently serves on the boards of Robert C. Parker School, Friends Seminary, and Friends Council on Education. His work at Oakwood weaves together many strands of his personal and professional background, and he is especially pleased to be in an environment with long-standing Quaker traditions. Peter lives on the Oakwood campus with his two dogs and enjoys spending time in the surrounding countryside, on foot and on his bike. |

Anna Bertucci is the Assistant Head for Academics and Student Life and the Head of the Upper School. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Anna teaches World History, European History, and Art History. Anna received her MA in Educational Leadership from Teacher's College, Columbia University and her BA in History of Architecture and Art from University of Illinois in Chicago. Recently, she participated in the Friends Council on Education Institute for Engaging Leadership in Friends Schools. Before joining the faculty at Oakwood in 1999, Anna taught history for three years in Brooklyn and worked at the Field Museum and Art Institute in Chicago. Anna lives on campus with her husband Stephen and her young son, Soren. |

Emily Boronkay |

Emily Boronkay joined the Upper School Academic Support Center this fall. She is a graduate of Westtown Friends School, holds a BA with majors in English, Psychology and Education from Eastern New Mexico University and received a master's degree in Special Education from Chapman University. Teaching an adult friend to read, while as an elementary student she herself was learning, led to a lifetime desire to share knowledge with people of all ages and abilities. She has taught special education preschool, elementary remedial, middle school humanities, high school and adult special education and adult ESL. Emily grew up in Medford Lakes, NJ, and lived in San Diego for 26 years. Last year she was drawn back to the east coast and currently resides in the woods 'across the river' in Highland with her dog, Bella, and assorted wildlife. Her children, Bekkah and Josh, are university students in California. |

Karen Butt began working with middle school students in the academic support center in 2002. She holds a bachelors degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and has taught special education in private and public schools for fourteen years. Prior to coming to Oakwood, she worked at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, and was the Director of the Learning Center at Storm King School across the Hudson River. Karen has taught all ages from birth to grade twelve but enjoys middle school the most. She and husband Rex, a professor at Bronx Community College, live in Poughkeepsie and have two adult children. |

Charlie Butts has been at Oakwood longer than any current faculty member and has worn many hats since arriving in 1981. He has taught 9th and 10th grade English, Senior Anthropology, and served as Director of Athletics for 13 years and Dean of Students for 3 years. In addition to his current administrative responsibilities, Charlie is the Director of Athletics, teaches English and History, coaches girls varsity basketball and softball. He is a dual graduate of Colgate University with a B.A. in History and M.A.T. in Social Studies. He enjoys golf, Mayan studies, and spending time with his cats. |

Randi Chalfin has been Oakwood's art teacher since 1999. Before coming here, she lived in New York City for 20 years. She is a graduate of Teachers College at Columbia University and resides on campus with her husband Hugh and 15 year old son, Gabriel. Randi has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, and is currently interested in social and political collaborative art. She enjoys, yoga, gardening and her new found love, kayaking. |

Chad is a graduate of Perkiomen School in Pennsylvania, and independent school much like Oakwood, and holds both an undergraduate and Master's degrees from Brown University in Mechanical Engineering. Simon Culley came to Oakwood in 2005 as middle school math teacher and varsity boys' soccer coach. He also holds a post-graduate Certificate in Education from Exeter University, England. Simon and his wife, Jessica, have a young son, Ethan. Bill Doolittle |

Bill Doolittle teaches science and coaches cross country. After receiving a BS in Environmental Studies from Tufts University, he went on to obtain both an MS and PhD in Ecology from the University of Tennessee. Bill has been a researcher, public health agent, and water treatment plant operator. His ecology classes collect water quality data for the Changing Hudson Project of the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, to which he is a consultant. Bill has taught at Oakwood since 1984 and enjoys bicycling, kayaking, snorkeling, restoring boats, visiting family, and teaching practical jokes to his grandson. |

Nancy Doolittle is Middle School Head. She received her B.A. from Tufts University, majoring in English and sociology, and her M.S.S.W. from the University of Tennessee with a concentration in clinical treatment. She has held a variety of positions at Oakwood since arriving here in 1984 including School Counselor, Coordinator of the Community Service Program, Director of the International Program, and Middle School Dean. Nancy enjoys life on campus with her husband, Bill, and their three children, Tim, Pete, and Amanda who have grown up at Oakwood and have fond memories of weekend open houses at their home. Nancy spends summers in Naples, Maine, with her extended family, and finds relaxation in gardening, sewing and boating. |

Michael Gallo Farrell has been at Oakwood since 2000, teaching photography and middle school art and serving as faculty advisor for the yearbook. He has been a professional photographer and artist for 25 years, continuing to work professionally and regularly exhibiting his work in galleries. Michael is also affiliated with the Mill Street Loft, a non-profit arts organization in Poughkeepsie. He is the Associate Director and the Director of Photography of the Art Institute of the Mill Street Loft, a portfolio development program for advanced high school artists. In addition, Michael is the sponsor for the Art Institute's chapter of the National Art Honor Society. He lives in Hyde Park with his wife, Barbara, and two cats. They are avid gardeners, vegetarian culinary artists, and consumers of art. |

Helena Fleig joined the Oakwood community this fall as a history teacher. After receiving a B.A. in History and Religious Studies from Fordham University in the Bronx, Helena left her beloved New York City for several years to give Massachusetts a try. There, she completed a Masters of Theological Studies and Secondary Education Program in History at Harvard Divinity School. Since then, Helena has begun adding the environment and farming to her previous list of urban and social justice interests. She resides on campus with no pets (yet). |

Lacey Fredericks |

Lacey Fredericks is head of the math-science department. She came to Oakwood as a student teacher in 1996 during her senior year at Vassar, and liked Oakwood so much that she couldn't leave after receiving her B.A. in mathematics. Lacey teaches Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus, (AB and BC) and topics in mathematics. She lives on campus with her husband Glenn, and their two young children, Elias and Adele. Lacey has spent summers teaching math at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Summer Programs, as well as exploring her abilities as a nursery school teacher. |

Lauren Hoyt is the Director of College Counseling and a dorm parent in Reagan. She grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated from the Ellis School, an independent day school for girls. Lauren holds an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College and a Masters Degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Ohio State University. Prior to her arrival at Oakwood in 2006, Lauren had worked professionally in the residential life departments at both Bryn Mawr College and Vassar College. Lauren lives on campus with Nora Landon and enjoys cooking, gardening, and being outside as much as possible. |

Telma Koch has taught Spanish full time at Oakwood since 1996 and developed the Spanish program currently in place. She received her BA/MA in English Language and Linguistics from the Universidad de Chile and her EdM in Language Teaching and Learning from Rutgers in 1997. Before coming to Oakwood Friends, Telma taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in Santiago, Chile, her homeland. She also held a full-time position at UNIACC School of Arts in Santiago. Besides teaching all levels of Spanish, Telma also works as an advisor and lifesports coach. She has a variety of interests including traveling "anywhere" and learning "anything" from architecture and drawing to piano playing and German. Telma lives on campus with her son Isaac Andrew. |

Joanne has been at Oakwood Friends School since 1984 after earning her Registered Nurse degree from Dutchess Community College. Prior to that, she had been pursuing a medical technology degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo when she relocated to the Hudson Valley from Buffalo with her husband who began a career at IBM.
Throughout her time at Oakwood, she has worked with students, parents, faculty and administration in a variety of roles. Currently as Assistant Head for Operations, she continues to be actively involved in the life at Oakwood.
Home is in Wappingers Falls where Joanne lives with her husband. Often, the house is filled with their three children and spouses, and five grandchildren ranging in age from 4 months to 14 years. This makes for a lively crowd which is thoroughly enjoyed! |

After receiving a B.A. degree in chemistry from SUNY Buffalo, he was employed by IBM as a chemist and engineering manager for 35 years. After his retirement he decided to pass on his practical and theoretical knowledge to young aspiring scientists. Aaron Lieberman began teaching music in the middle and upper schools in 2004. Barbara Lonczak became Associate Director of Admissions last May. She has had extensive experience working with a variety of non-profit organizations in outreach, fund-raising, donor relations, communications, event planning, and advocacy roles. Over the span of the past decade, she has worked for Historic Hudson Valley in Tarrytown, Kingston-Newburgh Enterprise Corporation, and the Liberty Partnership Program for Youth Development at Orange County Community College. She is a member of the Architecture Review Commission in Newburgh, and serves on the board of Trestle, Inc., which helps fund arts projects in public spaces. Barbara studied in both Spain and Mexico during high school and college, and she is a capable speaker of Spanish. She has a BA in Liberal Studies from the University of Montana. Barbara and her husband John are the parents of Will '06, Ted '08 and Kip '11. |

He holds a certificate in Juvenile Justice, a B.A. from Marist College and an M.S.W. from Adelphi University. He is very active in the "Alternatives to Violence Program" and facilitates weekend AVP seminars in correctional facilities. Robert has been with Oakwood Friends since 1987 and, despite his high standards for dorm room cleanliness, has built a following of fiercely loyal Reagan Dorm alums who make a point of seeing him on their visits back to the school. |

Julie has designed and directed the Summer Youth Advocacy Program here on campus since she instituted it in 2004. Marissa Parra came to Oakwood in 2003 to teach Spanish. She also has taught at Coleman High School, Woodstock Spanish School and Benedictine Hospital, in addition to being a translator for the Ulster County Mental Health Clinic. After receiving her bachelor's degree in Spanish literature from a private university in Buenos Ares, she taught Spanish before moving to this country 14 years ago. Marisa once toured in Yugoslavia with an Argentinean folk dance team and continues with her love of dancing by being active in salsa on weekends. She is the mother of Mauro 07 and lives in Craig Dorm. |

John is currently the director of the New Jersey Association of Independent School's New Teacher Institute and Instructional Skills program. Jeremy Robbins first joined the Oakwood community in 2001 immediately after completing his BA program in literature, history, and philosophy at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Over the course of four years, he taught both Middle School French, Drama, and Earth Science. Jeremy left Oakwood in 2005 to pursue a year-long program in Private School Leadership at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University. After earning his MA degree, he returned to the Hudson Valley, where he met his future wife Melissa and began building a house in Hopewell Junction. Their pets include a llama, four goats, a snake, and a new kitten, Clio. Jeremy returns to Oakwood this year as the Dean of Students for the Upper School. He also teaches Middle School French and 9th Grade History. |

Cynthia Shellhammer became Director of Health Services in 2004. She grew up in Poughkeepsie, attended Spackenkill High School and now lives in Pleasant Valley with her husband, Michael, and daughter, Sarah. She has served on a number of school committees and has been president of a parents' association, school board and parish council. Cynthia graduated from Bainbridge College in Ireland with an A.A.S. in Computer Science, from Dutchess County BOCES with an LPN in Nursing, and from Dutchess Community College with an AAS in Liberal Arts/Dance History and an AAS in Nursing. She also holds a Dental Assisting License, and is certified in Radiology, Pharmaceutical Technology and CPR/ACLS instructor. Currently she is working towards her BSN at Excelsior College in Albany. |

Chibuzo Uruakpa has been teaching French since 2002. Christine Whiting joined the Upper School Academic Support Center this fall and also teaches 6th and 7th grade English. She has a BA in psychology from St. Lawrence University. Prior to coming to Oakwood, she worked at Rippowam-Cisqua School and Rumsey Hall School. |

David Whiting joined Oakwood this fall as the new Dean of Residential Life and history teacher for 7th and 8th grades. He is responsible for all activities and organizational structures associated with the residential life program. Dave grew up in independent schools and is a graduate of Cate School near Santa Barbara where he was a boarding student. He holds an undergraduate degree in history from Middlebury College. For the past eight years, he worked at Rumsey Hall in Connecticut where he and his wife Christine were dormitory supervisors. They live on campus with their 18 month old son, JD, and Brewzer, a yellow lab. |

Pamela Williamson |

Pamela Williamson has been teaching English as a Second Language to international students since 2003. Because of her love of language, Pamela studied French in Quebec and in Paris at the Sorbonne and studied Spanish in Guadalajara, Mexico. She received her MATESL from St. Michael's College in Vermont. Before coming to Oakwood, her dream school, she taught languages throughout the world. While pressing toward the mark, Pamela enjoys reading, art and weekends in Montreal. |
