Oakwood's program is college-preparatory and 100% of our graduates attend college. The curriculum in the upper school is designed to help students develop the skills they will need to succeed in college. Teachers emphasize reading, writing, speaking, listening, and calculating. The program employs a variety of study strategies and ways in which students can evaluate knowledge and absorb it most effectively. Students pursue their subjects with a critical eye, examining relationships and exploring the value of information-based research, experimentation, and analysis. They are asked to form coherent conclusions and to support them with evidence. All of this begins to form the groundwork for college level work, and the college selections process.
The goal of the college counseling program, which begins formally in the junior year, is to assess the needs and aspirations of each student and to identify appropriate matches between student and college. A counselor works regularly with families and students throughout the college selection process, and each student's course load is evaluated to ensure that it meets the requirements of targeted colleges and universities. Students and families work together with the college counselor, the advisor, and the upper school head to develop a college list, to complete applications, and to choose among those colleges at which a student is accepted.
