The Summer Youth Advocacy Program

2012 dates TBD

In keeping with the school’s mission of social justice and education, for the past seven years Oakwood Friends School has been offering a free, two week, residential advocacy training project – the Summer Youth Advocacy Program-- for low-income, minority Dutchess County youth between the ages of 13 and 18.  The Summer Youth Advocacy Program increases understanding of the political process, teaches the tools of grassroots, social and political advocacy through the arts, and fosters an early interest in and commitment to civic participation.

The College Essay Workshop

2012 dates TBD

The college essay is a critical part of the college application where students are given the opportunity to share who they are, what matters to them, what they want in life and what they would bring to a college. In this 3-day program, students will go through the various steps required to write a successful college essay. The goal of the program is for students to complete a personal essay and develop the techniques and skills necessary to prepare additional short answers and supplements.  Through self-reflection, guided writing, reading of successful college essays, and one-on-one revision work, students will learn how to tell their own stories in effective, memorable ways that are appropriate for the college application. For high school Juniors.
