“I wanted a place where I could explore my interests. The college counselor helped me narrow the field. She grounded this whole process.”

College Attending

Sarah Lawrence College

As you began the college process, what were you looking for in a college and what were your initial feelings towards the process?

At the start I knew I wanted a small college on the east coast that wasn't too far away and would be in a familiar area. I wanted a place where I could explore my interests and I knew a liberal arts college would be good for me.

What roles did faculty members and/or the college counselor play in the college process?

The college counselor helped out by making this big process seem more manageable. She helped me narrow the field, made it more realistic, and set deadlines for me so I didn't get lost in this huge decision. She grounded this whole process for me.

How did you make the decision on which college you wanted to attend?

It was a very strenuous decision. I visited all of the colleges and looked closely at the websites. What really helped me decide between the main contenders was going to the accepted students' days at the schools. They answered a lot of questions that were on my mind and questions I hadn't thought of asking yet. They gave me perspective and I felt like I could really compare the schools at a higher level and make a more informed decision.

Looking back, what did you learn about yourself through the college process?

I got a better grip on the whole process and I learned how to educate myself. I came into my own about what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go rather than what others wanted for me. Also, the college essays helped me really reflect on my Oakwood career and what I have learned.

Do you have any advice for students going through the college process?

Always get everything done as early as possible. It's almost never too early to start the process. It's not a good thing to leave everything to the last minute. The more you can set deadlines and break up the process into small chunks the more you will be able to succeed and it makes it a lot easier. Good luck!
