Do I need a laptop as a boarder?

Just like college, it is recommended to have a laptop as a boarder at Oakwood. The campus is equipped with Wi-Fi and instructors make use of Google classroom. Many assignments can be accessed and submitted online. Just in case, we do have a computer lab, a few computers in the dorms, and printers available to students additionally.

Do I have to pay for laundry?

Oakwood’s dorms are equipped with washers and dryers. Students do not have to pay any money to wash their clothes. Students will just need to bring their own laundry detergent.

Can I bring a bike, skateboard, scooter, etc.?

Just like you might see on a college campus, you will see some students traveling in between buildings on campus on wheels. Boarders are allowed to keep these items on campus locked up on bike racks outside the dorms or in their rooms.

Can I smoke on campus?

Oakwood is a smoke free campus. Smoking is not permitted by students or adults on campus.

Is there a bank or ATM I can use on or near campus?

Campus Bank: Oakwood Friends School maintains a campus bank for student use. Times of operation will be posted in the Main Office. Students are advised to keep only small amounts of cash in their rooms, and to deposit other funds in the student bank. Normally, students find that $20 - $25 weekly is adequate spending money. Parents or guardians can stipulate the amount of money their child students may withdraw from the bank on a weekly basis. However, parents should leave money on deposit in the student bank to cover extra expenses for weekend activities, travel, and emergencies. If a student wishes to make a withdrawal of more than $300, permission from the student’s parents or guardians is needed.

Off Campus Banking: There are several national and international banks located near the Oakwood Friends School campus. Students can open personal accounts but they must have an adult sign as a co-account holder if the student is less than 18 years of age. At the present time students less than 18 years of age cannot be issued debit cards; only ATM cash cards are available to minors.


Can I go off campus?

Boarders can sign out to go off campus with a dorm parent as long as they have permission from their parents. Students can take advantage of the local shops and businesses nearby within walking distance including, Oakwood Commons, 5 Guys, Starbucks, Tea Talk Bubble Tea, Table Talk Diner, frozen yogurt, Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall, Bonsai Japanese sushi, Chinese take-out, movie theaters, cafes, supermarkets, and more.

How many students per dorm room?

The majority of all dorm rooms are doubles. Two students per room. Each dorm room accommodates each student with a bed, a dresser, a closet, a desk, and a safe.
