September Opening Plans

At Oakwood Friends School we are excited to welcome new and returning students back this September. After a summer of extensive work focused on the health and safety of our community, a commitment to mission and the academic strength of our program, we are prepared to support each of our students, through both our in-person and our online learning platforms.

We are prepared and ready to safely and responsibly get going this fall.

During this last year, I have seen our Oakwood community at our creative, adaptive, and resilient best. Health and safety, a sense of community, and our commitment to academic excellence continue to guide our decision-making as we support and challenge our students. We are closely monitoring the environment in New York and are prepared and ready to adapt quickly and thoughtfully, should conditions change.

Over the summer, we  have:

  • made significant investments in the health and safety of our community

  • enhanced the physical spaces, classrooms, and performance spaces

  • expanded out outdoor classrooms to include more of the 55 acre campus

  • fully updated and renovated our 100-year old theater

  • expanded the technological infrastructure

  • invested in the support of and professional development of our faculty and staff

  • Listened, responded to, and supported families and students through these difficult months away from campus

Classes will look different this fall

  • Social distancing, masks, and adherence to all DOH and CDC health protocols

  • Creative scheduling allows both boarding and day students to engage in all levels of core and elective class offerings

  • Students will continue to eat well and eat healthy in our dining hall.

  • Great outdoors! We have created several outdoor classrooms and offerings; thankful for and taking advantage of our 55+ acre campus

  •  You may even see a physics lab or music class with students participating synchronously in-person and remotely from four continents.

Regardless of where our students are physically, we will be connected as one Oakwood community.

Over the last 224 years, Oakwood Friends School has guided, nurtured, and inspired students. Remaining true to mission, we see challenges as opportunities and find strength in diversity. I look forward to seeing you this year and continuing this journey together. See you on campus!

Hello,

My name is Chad Cianfrani and I am the Head of School at Oakwood Friends School. I have been engaged with our community for over 15 years and have worked closely with our students in the classrooms, the dorms, the sports fields and for the last five years serving as Head of School.

This past year, I have witnessed us at our creative, adaptive, and resilient best. Parents, students, faculty, staff, and board members are turning challenges into opportunities and finding strength through our diversity. We are excited to support our students this fall with both in-person and remote learning options.

Though deliberate and thoughtful planning we are preparing multiple levels of support on the academic, social-emotional, community, and campus fronts. We continue to make significant investments in the health and safety of our community, enhance the physical spaces and classrooms, complete the renovation of our 100-year old theater, expand the technological infrastructure and support the professional development of our faculty and staff. Our planning remains guided by three key metrics:

  • Health and safety of the community
  • Strong academic programming and continued support for all students
  • Social-emotional support and connections with one another

This fall we are excited to open our campus fully, to both boarding and day students. Families will have the choice to join us in-person for the full academic day or engage remotely through our online programming. We are closely monitoring the environment in New York and are prepared and ready to adapt quickly and thoughtfully, should conditions change.

Classes may look different this fall. You may even see a chemistry lab or music class with students participating simultaneously from three continents. Regardless of where our students are physically, we will be connected as one Oakwood community. This year will also be a first for me as I officially become an Oakwood parent when my son joins the 6th grade for in-person instruction this September.

Over the last 224 years, Oakwood Friends School has guided, nurtured, and inspired students. Remaining true to mission, we see challenges as opportunities and find strength through our diversity. When we moved to our Hudson Valley campus 100 years, ago, Oakwood was navigating another global pandemic. As true to our mission then as we are today, we prioritize the health, the safety, the inherent curiosity, and the academic potential of every one of our students.

I look forward to you joining us this year and learning more about Oakwood. If you would like to take a look at Oakwood’s detailed reopening plans, policies, and procedures, please check them out on the website. See you on campus!
